This is a wonderful urban romp with a city park-type atmosphere. The area is a wooded oasis, bound by houses on two sides and a farm and a highway on the other two sides. The trails, groomed for skating and diagonal striding, are short, and the entire area can be skied in an hour. In truth, the area is too small to be a destination, but it is ideal for skiers taking a break from traveling to and from other destinations. Avalanche potential: noneSkiing in the Chinook Pass-Naches Peak area starts when the first major snowstorm hits the Cascades. There is great fun to be had challenging the open bowls leading to Dewey Lakes or simply enjoying the incomparable views of Mount Rainier. The skiing season around Chinook Pass starts and ends early. Beginning as soon as Chinook Pass is closed for the winter, it ends when 4,694-foot Cayuse Pass is snowed in, usually by mid- to late-December. In late spring there is often another week or two of skiing before the snowplows come to end the fun. Note: Do not even consider skiing up the highway to Cayuse Pass or Chinook Pass during the midwinter months. The road crosses several steep avalanche slide areas, making travel extremely hazardous.
